APRIL IS ORAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH | | | According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, close to 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer this year; and it will kill one person every hour of every day. The incidence rate has increased each of the last 7 years. There is a newly identified etiology for oral cancer - the HPV-16 virus. It is soon to become the dominant cause of oral cancers in our country. The fastest growing segment of oral cancer patients are young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals. Dentists and hygienists are the first line of defense against oral cancer through the process of early discovery. Once cancer is diagnosed, the dental team should be a part of the treatment plan. Our guest speaker, Dr. Elizabeth Feldman, leads the dental section of the Thoracic/Head and Neck Cancers Specialty Section at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando. She will discuss the prosthetic correction and management of the cancer patient; the effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy on the oral cavity; and the role of dental professionals in the pre and post treatment of the patient.

NATIONAL COLON CANCER MONTH | | | March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month
Throughout the month of March, Centra Care is offering FREE Colon Cancer Screening Kits
Early detection is vital -- over 80% of all cases of colorectal cancer could have been prevented, if detected early. Tens of thousands of lives could be saved each year with just a simple screening.
Getting a screening test could save your life. Here's how:
- Colorectal cancer usually starts from polyps in the colon or rectum.
- Over time, some polyps can turn into cancer.
- Screening tests can find polyps, so they can be removed before they turn into cancer.
- Screening tests can alsofind colorectal cancer. When it is found early, the chance of being cured is good.
Who Should Be Screened?
- All men and women, annually, beginning at age 50
- Those considered to be at high risk should begin screening before age 50:
- Family history of colon or rectal cancer
- Personal History of colon or rectal cancer or colon polyps
- Diagnoses of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
Other factors that can increase your risk of developing colon cancer include:
- Drinking one or more servings of alcohol a day
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Eating 2-3 servings of red meat a week
- Physical Inactivity (less than 30 minutes a day
