Greater Orlando Dental Hygiene Association Newsletter FEBRUARY 2009

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Thanks to all for a successful GODHA meeting.  We are definitely "exploring" all areas of dental hygiene and making the most of 2009.  Continued support will complete the journey.  Let's make sure we take every opportunity to promote oral health.  We are purchasing community project supplies so our organization can help spread the word about oral healthcare.  The projects are an opportunity to offer help , answer questions, and reach out to the public.  Please feel free to join us in the quest to help others learn more about dental hygiene.

Kae Sylvia, RDH
GODHA President

DENTAL HEALTH MONTH

toothbrush movingOn Saturday February 7, Tricia Bracher, Zamantha Diaz and I had the privilege to represent the Greater Orlando Dental Hygiene Association at two Orange County Public Libraries. At both West Oaks and Winter Garden branches we covered dental topics regarding children, adults and even pets. We gave out samples and answered questions for about an hour at each location. We found many questions were regarding financial issues. With the way the economy is people were concerned about ways they could avoid costly dental procedures. This was a great opportunity to talk about preventative means such as flossing and keeping up with hygiene visits.  We can't wait to do it again!!

Our very own Jolie Davis was featured on the front cover of the recent issue of Access Magazine. It was a great article  and we are very proud of Jolie.  Congratulations for representing our profession so well!

"Spoon Up Some Yogurt"

Eating at least 1/4 cup every day led to a 60% lower risk of gum disease and a 50% lower risk of tooth loss in a Japanese study published in the Journal of Periodontology.  The effect is thought to be linked to the probiotics in yogurt, but not in most other dairy.  from GoodHousekeeping, March 2009"
