                            PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Happy Summer !!!!
It is hard to believe summer is already here.  For those who drive to work everyday I am sure you join me in enjoying the ride without stopping for busses.
As preventive health care workers, we hygienists have a unique opportunity to encourage our patients to be safe this summer and remind them to use sunscreen when out in the sun.  Skin cancers are real and can be devastating.  We may not think of skin cancer as being life threatening but some of you may remember that I lost a brother because of skin cancer 3 years ago.  So YES, skin cancer can be life threatening.  Let's be especially alert when completing our oral health examinations to look for suspicious area on the head and neck.  It is not a bad idea to ask our patients if they have observed any area on the head and neck that concern them.  This will open a dialog for discussion that we are concerned for the whole person, not just the mouth.
I miss seeing all my friends at GODHA during the summer months.  We are family.
Jo Ann

                CENTRAL FLORIDA DENTAL OUTREACH

The Central Florida Dental Outreach was held on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday June 8th at Greenberg Dental's 21 operatory Highland Lakes shopping center office in the strip center on Colonial & Hiawassee in Orlando.  Many thanks to
Dr. Andrew Greenberg who organized the event and donated the use of his office to have the event. We also want to thank Julie Kestler, of the Dental Care Access Foundation, for getting most of the other volunteers and promoting the event, and Northland Church for sponsoring the event and sending many volunteers to help with food and whatever else needed to be done. Other organizations that participated are Brassler, Creative Printing and Publishing, Florida Department of Health, MyDent, Pentron, Pine Hills Community Center, Orange County Government, Schein Dental, Sun Star Americas, and UCF School of Nursing.
There were several screening sessions ahead of time to have the patients scheduled so that more could actually be done on them at one time instead of just the most "urgent" treatment. Most of these patients do not have access to regular dental care and are very appreciative of any treatment that can be done. It was a huge success, and an honor to be able help over 200 patients who were treated that day.  There were many dentists and assistants who volunteered for both days.  Sandy Larew, Dental Hygiene Coordinator for the event, appreciates all the dental hygienists who took the time to volunteer:

Another Event will be planned for next year, and we hope to get even more volunteers involved, so stay tuned for more information.

Congratulations to Tiffany Baggs who is a proud Mom to twins Mallory and Malin born on June 11.
